Photographing Stokksnes and Vestrahorn, Iceland

A return trip to eastern Iceland to photograph Vestrahorn in (hopefully) more favorable weather and light.

Located on the southeastern coastline of Iceland, near the town of Höfn, is a headland named Stokksnes. Famous for its dramatic mountain range (named Vestrahorn) and surrounding black sand dunes, Stokksnes is easily one of Iceland's most epic landscape photography locations.

I first visited Stokksnes in the winter of 2019. The weather was cloudy, windy, and bitterly cold. My images turned out okay, but nothing really worth keeping. Frustrated, I planned a return trip the following year, only to cancel it soon thereafter because of Covid travel restrictions.

Months later in August of 2021, after Iceland re-opened to travelers, I went back. There were plenty of other locations on my photography itinerary, but I wanted to set aside at least one day for a return trip to Stokksnes. The result of that experience is documented in the video below.
