ChatGPT doesn't like my photography

Asking the the latest artificial intelligence model of ChatGPT to provide feedback and recommended edits for one of my landscape images

It goes without saying that we are living in the age of artificial intelligence—or more precisely, at the dawn of a new era in human existence, comparable to the Industrial Revolution, the advent of the internet, and the rise of smartphones. The hype train is running at full speed, and while I have concerns about the future use (and potential misuse) of this technology and its impact, I can’t help but be fascinated by its capabilities.

In case you weren’t aware, ChatGPT can do more than just chat—it can also analyze images and documents. To test this capability, I recently uploaded one of my landscape photos and asked the AI for feedback. I wanted to know how I could improve the shot if I had the chance to retake it and how I could edit it in Photoshop to make it more visually appealing and engaging.

The results were surprising, to say the least, as I share in my latest video:

All things considered, I don’t take ChatGPT’s feedback too seriously. If I had to guess, it’s simply pulling from “best practices” in landscape photography—sourced from countless blog posts, books, and videos—and applying them to the subjects it recognizes in an image. The result feels intelligent, but it’s really just an illusion, much like a psychic delivering insights that seem profound or a Magic 8-Ball landing on just the right response.

That said, ChatGPT’s real strength lies in offering fresh perspectives. It encourages users to view their query—or image—from an angle they might not have considered, sparking new ideas and breaking creative blocks. While it’s no substitute for a seasoned photo editor (and likely never will be), it does a surprisingly good job of mimicking the experience, making it a useful tool for creative brainstorming.

Check out the video above to see ChatGPT's recommendations for editing an image in Photoshop, and its response when I uploaded a newly edited version for comparison.
