Realism: What We Can Learn from Cinematographer Roger Deakins

Earlier this year, while out on a morning run, I was listening to an episode of the Team Deakins podcast hosted by Roger and James Deakins. At one point during the show, Roger started talking about the influence of realism in filmmaking, and how he prioritizes creative interpretation in his work. His words literally stopped me in my tracks. I transcribed the episode, not entirely sure what I was going to do with it, but I kept returning to his words in the weeks thereafter. Months later, I put together this short video including a montage of Deakins’ work, edited narration by Deakins from the podcast, plus additional thoughts offered by me on what image makers can learn from him.
